Herbst appliance is a fixed functional appliance that was initially invented by Emil herbst, later popularised by Pancherz.

It is Rigid type of fixed functional appliance. It is used to advance the mandible in Class II patients with a retrognathic mandible.

It consists of a characteristic plunger rod, a tube and attachment to upper molar and lower premolar crowns or bands.

A number of modifications of Herbst appliance are available.

This appliance is used in non compliant patients of growing age.
